Trabalho e indústria na Primeira República: um ensaio de análise comparativa entre as sociedades do Rio Grande do Sul e de São Paulo
Resumo
This essay studies the regional markets of industrial labour in two Brazilian
regions, during the so-called period of Primeira República (1989-1930). It identifies
the existence of near full employment of the labour force in the region of Rio Grande
do Sul, where, as compared to the region of São Paulo, better work and rewards
conditions were observed. These conditions, however, did not jeopardize the relative
industrial performance of the former region: its productivity and capital intensity
levels were bigger than those of São Paulo, overcoming the disadvantadge associated
with bigger wages costs.
