Passado e futuro dos bancos comerciais
Resumo
The paper aims to analise the nature and functions of commercial
banks and its special relations with the Central Bank and tries to
investigate how the financial system transformations place in check the
specific activities of the commercial banks. We assume that commercial
banks are special institutions, because they participate in the monetary
sovereingty of the State, In virtue of that they are able to create credit
without previous savings and are the key elements of the complex and
hierarchical payement systems, therefore they are strongly regulated by
the Central Banks and recieve as counterpart the guaranty of last resort
liquidity to face the risks of generalize financial crises. Our hypothesis is
that the tipical activity of commercial banks are not in decline, neither
desapearing due the competitions of others financial institutions in the
context of financial liberalization of the eighties.
