An analysis of the evolution of components of aggregate demand: Brazil, 2000s.
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to present the trajectory of the components of aggregate demand in recent decade in Brazil emphasizing the main factors responsible for its performance. The components of aggregate demand showed considerable growth during most of the study period compared with the previous decade. However, unlike the 90s, in the 2000s there was much improvement in the external environment as the change of macroeconomic policy, especially in this second half of the decade. At this, a question arises: is this growth in macroeconomic policy response of the government or improvement of the external scenario. Therefore, we can characterize the dynamic of aggregate demand in the first half of the decade as caused mainly by the external sector. However, the latter half was generated by that dynamic both motives, except in period of crisis when macroeconomic policy is did even more remarkable, in attempting to offset the negative effects of the external sector on aggregate demand. However, this growth is not sustainable in the long term. In trying to characterize the Brazilian economy, will be utilized two scenarios built based on the models Thirlwall and Serrano.
Key words: Aggregate demand; macroeconomic policy; external sector.
