O desenvolvimento em crise: a liquidação do BRDE
Resumo
This article analyses some implications of the decision to close the
Banco Regional de Desenvolvimento do Extremo Sul (BRDE) - an offícial
development bank that operated in the three southern states of Brazil
(Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul). Beginning by a brief
description of the bank's history, and continuing by an analysis of its
contribution for the region's development during the last three decades, the
article ends by studying the causes of the crisis that led to the decision to
close down the BRDE. Those causes are considered to be related to the
financial crisis of the brazilian government sector and to the advancement of
proposals towards the reformation of the brazilian banking system. The
combined effects of those two processes led to the creation of the conditions
required for the decision to close the country's largest regional development
bank.
