O aumento da demanda estimula a produtividade? Uma análise de causalidade de Granger para a manufatura brasileira

Resumo

O objetivo deste artigo é testar a proposição kaldoriana sobre a relação causal entre a demanda manufatureira brasileira e a sua produtividade, conhecida como Lei de Kaldor-Verdoorn, no período 2004-13. Utilizamos a metodologia desenvolvida por Toda e Yamamoto (1995), a fim de verificar a hipótese de não causalidade de Granger. Duas especificações são testadas. Na primeira, é examinada a relação entre a produção manufatureira e a produtividade. Na segunda, é estimada uma equação que capta a interação entre a produtividade, o câmbio e as exportações manufatureiras. Os resultados, para a Lei de Kaldor-Verdoorn, indicam que existe bicausalidade entre a variável produção manufatureira e sua produtividade. Para a segunda especificação, verificamos que apenas a taxa de câmbio Granger-causa a produtividade. Desse modo, não encontramos evidências empíricas de que uma taxa de câmbio desvalorizada estimule o crescimento da produtividade manufatureira brasileira no período analisado.

Does the increasing demand raise productivity? A Granger causality analysis of the Brazilian manufacturing

Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to test the Kaldorian proposition about the causal relationship between the manufacturing demand and its labor productivity, known as the Kaldor-Verdoorn Law, in Brazil, in the period 2004-13.We employ the method developed by Toda and Yamamoto (1995) to test the hypothesis of no Granger causality. Two specifications are analyzed in this paper. In the first one, we examine the relationship between production and productivity in the manufacturing sector. In the second one, we estimate an equation that captures the relationship between labor productivity, the exchange rate, and the volume of exports. For the first specification, the results indicate that there is bi-causality between the manufacturing production and its productivity. On the other hand, for the second specification, the results suggest that only the exchange rate Granger-causes productivity growth. Therefore, we found no empirical evidence that a devalued exchange rate stimulates the growth of the Brazilian manufacturing productivity in the period under analysis.
